I must be honest, I have not read Lois Lowry's books. I have only read the synopsis of the stories and of her life's events.
It looks like she's seen much loss. That her experiences have led her to think more about how people interact with each other and how we should interact with each other towards betterment.
I get the impression in her later books' synopsis that she feels when people isolate themselves from what made them what they are, and what they are a part of, they trick themselves into thinking they are true and have the right to judge what is wrong and what is right.
But instead they are losing touch with understanding others. Sameness appears not to be the path to perfection. But instead a forsaking of understanding and learning. An allowance of ignorance to define ourselves, which not only stagnates our potential, but carries it's own momentum of self destruction.
